Why do Americans call football 'soccer'?
There are many people in the world who don't just watch or play Football.
They live Football. Most of them are Europeans and even some non-Europeans. Whenever they listen anyone who calls “Football” as “Soccer” they get real cringy and cranky.
Some people even argue with Americans about the name. But most of the people do not know the real story about SOCCER.
So here it is for those of you who do not know...
Around 200 years ago, in the United Kingdom the word “Soccer” was first used. This was used to differentiate between “Rugby Football” and “Association Football”.
As the words were too long they were shortened to “Rugger” and “Soccer” respectively. Rugger is also the current slang for rugby in the UK.
After a few years THE USA adapted the word to differentiate between their “American Football” and “Association Football”
So the next time you feel cringy when an American calls the beloved sport “Soccer” you know whom to blame.
